Quick answer: fall yard work comes down to five jobs done in the right order: deal with leaves, hold off on heavy pruning, feed the lawn in mid September, shut down water and fire features, and clear the gutters after leaf drop.

This guide covers each job, when to do it in the GTA, and one common piece of fall advice you should actually skip. When the season turns, our spring landscaping projects guide picks up where fall leaves off.

What to Do with Fall Leaves

A thin layer of leaves can be mulch-mowed straight into the lawn, where the shredded pieces feed the soil. Thick mats are the problem: they smother grass and breed mold, so rake or blow those onto beds or into collection bags.

Keep leaves out of water. A net over the pond saves hours of scooping, and our end-of-season pond guide explains why sunken leaves are the main cause of winter fish problems.

Should You Prune Trees and Shrubs in the Fall?

Mostly no, and this surprises people. Pruning tells the plant to push new growth, and growth started in fall cannot toughen up before frost kills it.

“Do not prune deciduous shrubs in late summer as that will encourage a flush of new growth that will not have the opportunity to harden off before winter, leaving the plant susceptible to frost damage and dieback.”

Sarah Vogel, Horticulture Educator, University of Illinois Extension

What is safe in fall: removing clearly dead, damaged, or hazardous branches. Save shaping and any major cuts for late winter, when the plant is fully dormant and the branch structure is easy to see.

When to Fertilize and Overseed a Lawn

Fall is when lawn work pays off most, and the window is specific.

“Mid-September is an excellent time to fertilize lawns.”

Richard Jauron and Aaron Steil, Iowa State University Extension

The same guidance applies to Ontario lawns: cool-season grass builds roots and energy reserves in fall, so a September feeding shows up as an earlier, thicker lawn next spring. Overseed thin patches from mid August to mid September, and keep mowing until the grass stops growing, usually early November.

How to Winterize Outdoor Features and Furniture

Water features come first because freezing damages them fastest. Fountains and container features get drained and stored; fish ponds get a de-icer and aerator instead, covered step by step in our pond winterization guide.

Gas fire features need their lines shut off and burners covered; see our comparison of fire pits, fire bowls, and outdoor fireplaces for what each type needs. Furniture cushions last years longer stored dry in a deck box or storage bin than left out under snow.

Delicate potted plants come indoors before the first frost. Tender bulbs like dahlias and cannas get lifted after the first light frost blackens their foliage.

Shorter days are also when landscape lighting earns its keep. Test fixtures and timers before the clocks change, and if anything needs replacing our guide to buying outdoor lighting covers the options.

How to Prepare Gutters and Downspouts for Winter

Clean gutters after most of the leaves are down, not before. Clogged gutters overflow against the fascia, and in winter they feed the ice dams that push water under shingles.

Check where each downspout dumps its water. It should discharge well away from the foundation. If a downspout floods the same spot every spring, a stone-lined channel solves it permanently: our river rocks guide shows how to build a dry creek bed for drainage.

Fall Yard Maintenance Checklist

Work by area and the whole list fits into two or three weekends.

AreaWhat to doWhen
LawnFertilize, overseed thin patches, keep mowingMid September
LeavesMulch-mow thin layers, rake thick mats, net the pondAs they fall
Trees and shrubsRemove dead wood only, save real pruning for late winterOctober
Water and fire featuresDrain fountains, winterize the pond, shut off gas linesLate October
Gutters and drainageClear gutters, check downspout runoff pathsAfter leaf drop

One more small job: top up mulch around trees and beds at 2 to 3 inches to insulate roots, keeping it a few inches back from trunks. Our river rock vs mulch comparison covers which material belongs where. And when the season turns, our spring landscaping projects guide picks up where this checklist leaves off.

Fall Outdoor Maintenance FAQs

Should I leave fallen leaves on the lawn?

A thin, shredded layer is fine and even feeds the soil. Run the mower over light coverage and leave the pieces. Thick, wet mats are different: they block light and air, so rake those onto garden beds or into bags before snow.

When should I stop mowing in Ontario?

Keep mowing as long as the grass keeps growing, which usually means into early November in the GTA. For the final cut of the season, drop the deck slightly lower so long blades do not mat down under the first heavy snow.

Should outdoor furniture be covered or stored for winter?

Frames handle winter under a fitted cover, but cushions and fabrics should come inside or into a weatherproof deck box. Trapped moisture is what ruins them, so everything goes in clean and completely dry, with covers vented where possible.

When should gutters be cleaned in the fall?

After most of the leaves are down, usually late October or early November. Cleaning earlier just means doing it twice. Check them once more before the first big snow, and make sure downspouts send water well away from the foundation.
